At the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference, before a ballroom packed with conservative donors, influencers, and elected officials, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson delivered a warning every American needs to hear. He told the room that if Republicans lose the midterms, Democrats would investigate “the president’s family, the cabinet, his donors and friends,” and that “half of you in this room will be targeted.” Then he said the part that should define this entire election cycle: “I run the protection program. I’ll take care of you.” The Speaker of the House, third in line to the presidency, just described his job not as legislating or conducting oversight, but as running a protection program. That phrase belongs to organized crime. It belongs to the language of people who know there is something to hide. And he said it out loud, on camera, with pride. Oversight is not political revenge. It is one of Congress’s most fundamental responsibilities. When the Speaker openly promises to prevent it, he is describing a system where loyalty matters more than accountability.
To justify it, they reached for the most emotionally loaded word in the American vocabulary: communism. Johnson invoked Reagan and the Soviet threat to describe candidates who support ranked-choice voting and rent freezes. Trump went further, calling Democrats “animals” and writing that “assassinations of those who oppose them” is part of their ideology. This is McCarthyism, not as a metaphor but structurally. McCarthy never had to prove anyone was a communist. He just said the word and let fear do the rest. And while Johnson promised protection to those inside his movement, two courtrooms showed what life looks like outside of it. In Texas, a man received 30 years in federal prison for moving a box of political pamphlets, while a judge said he wanted to “send a message to anyone who shares a similar ideology.” In New York, ICE agents entered a polling place to confront a poll worker over an Instagram post calling for an agent’s indictment, handing her a document warning she might be “in violation of federal law.”
This is the protection program in action. At the top, a Speaker who promises donors no committee will touch them. At the bottom, a man serving decades for pamphlets and a woman intimidated at her voting site for a social media post. Protection flows up. Punishment flows down. And the word they use to justify all of it is communism. Mike Johnson is scared. They are running a protection program because they know what is in the files. The desperation is the tell. When the Speaker has to invoke the specter of Soviet communism, he is not operating from a position of strength. He is operating from fear, and that fear exists because millions of us have refused to stop speaking, showing up, and demanding accountability. The midterms are five months away.
