Kristi Noem will make sure the "Right People" win our elections

Kristi Noem arrived nearly an hour late to a press conference surrounded by layers of theatrical secrecy, journalists shuttled in government convoys to an undisclosed location, propaganda posters lining the walls, all designed to manufacture the feeling of a national crisis. But the stagecraft wasn’t the most alarming part of the day. That came when a reporter’s question caught her off script, and she said the quiet part out loud: that the goal of this administration’s voter ID push is to make sure the “right people” are voting to elect the “right leaders.” There is no innocent reading of those words. It was an admission that this has never been about fraud prevention. It is about engineering outcomes by shrinking the electorate.

The historical echoes are impossible to ignore. After Reconstruction, Southern lawmakers used the same “election integrity” framing to justify poll taxes, literacy tests, and deliberately confusing registration requirements designed to strip Black Americans of their right to vote. That system didn’t collapse on its own. It took nearly a century of marching, bleeding, and dying before the Voting Rights Act of 1965 forced a reckoning. And now the same playbook is being run again, with the SAVE Act dressed up as common sense reform while the actual target remains the same: voters who are unlikely to support the party in power. The fact that non-citizens aren’t actually voting in any meaningful numbers doesn’t matter to them. The boogeyman doesn’t need to be real to be useful.

And then there is Kristi Noem herself, a figure who has made cruelty into a brand and spectacle into a governing strategy. From posing in front of caged detainees in El Salvador to bragging in her own book about killing her puppy, to presiding over what the Wall Street Journal described as a department in “constant chaos,” she has shown us exactly who she is. When even border czar Tom Homan refused to defend her “right people voting” comment on national television, it said everything. The call to action here is clear: the SAVE Act must not pass, representatives need to hear from constituents, and every one of us has a role to play in making sure this administration understands that we are watching, we are counting votes, and November is coming.
