Kash Patel's latest scandal is so outrageous, it may end his FBI career
Last August, the Director of the FBI put on a mask and snorkel and went swimming above the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. Forty feet below him lay the remains of more than a thousand American sailors and Marines who have been entombed there since December 7, 1941. Navy SEALs led the excursion with two boats. The Defense Department called it a “VIP Snorkel” in internal emails. Snorkeling and diving are prohibited at the memorial. Visitors are not even allowed to wear swimwear. The only people normally permitted in that water are Navy divers placing the urns of Arizona survivors so they can rest with their shipmates. Not even the families of the men who died aboard that ship are allowed in. And Kash Patel decided it was his personal swimming pool.
A Navy veteran and professor at the Naval Academy called it “horrifying” and compared it to “playing kickball on top of the graves at Arlington.” A former FBI special agent said, “The badge is a responsibility, not a VIP pass.” The Navy claims it cannot determine who organized the excursion. The FBI called the reporting “stupid” and described it as “a historical tour to honor heroes.” And none of this should surprise us, because Patel takes his orders from the man who called Americans killed in combat “losers” and “suckers.” The man who did not want wounded veterans in his military parade because “it doesn’t look good for me.” This is not a series of unrelated scandals. This is a worldview.
But on the same weekend this story broke, thousands of Americans marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, the same bridge where peaceful marchers were beaten bloody sixty-one years ago for trying to win the right to vote. Kirk Carrington, who was a teenager chased through those streets on Bloody Sunday in 1965, was there again. He is now seventy-five years old. “It’s really just appalling,” he said, “that after 60-plus-odd years we are still fighting for the same thing we fought for back then.” They could have stayed home. They could have accepted this as the new reality. Instead, they marched. Because this country still belongs to all of us. And November is coming.
