Sitting in the library of the only president ever forced to resign over abuse of power, Vice President J.D. Vance declared that Richard Nixon’s “historical legacy is enjoying a bit of a renaissance, and I think deservedly so.” He argued that if Watergate happened today, it would amount to “like a 12-hour news story,” called it “crazy” that the scandal ever brought down a presidency, and compared himself to Nixon before concluding, “I’ve always liked Richard Nixon.” But buried in that moment was a confession Vance didn’t seem to realize he was making. Because if Watergate would barely make the news today, what he was really admitting is that the scandals surrounding Donald Trump have grown so large and so constant that the crime which once toppled a president would now barely interrupt a news cycle. Nixon’s corruption didn’t get smaller. Our tolerance for presidential corruption got much larger.
And it wasn’t an isolated slip. It is a strategy. They are choosing their words to lower the standards of what Americans will tolerate, because if you normalize the language, you normalize the behavior that follows. Trump has been workshopping “Dumbocrats,” even running a poll to crowdsource the best spelling. A sitting cabinet secretary called the artists who walked away from the Trump-branded Freedom 250 event “libtards” on a stage on the National Mall, and faced no consequences. And after the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool renovation failed because of his own administration’s incompetence, they invented a vandalism conspiracy, arrested people for touching the water, and deployed the National Guard to guard the peeling paint. This is how authoritarian normalization works. You test the language. Nobody stops you. You escalate. Nobody stops you. You test the action. Then you rehabilitate historical corruption itself. Each test that passes without consequence gives permission for the next.
But while Vance was telling Americans that Watergate wouldn’t matter anymore, a legal battle was quietly progressing. Trump filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC over an edited documentary because his ego could not let it go. And now the BBC’s lawyers are using discovery to demand exactly the evidence that brought down Nixon: his phone logs, his calendars, his schedules, and his communications with advisers from Election Day 2020 through January 20, 2021. Nobody forced him to file this. He opened the door himself, and now he is complaining that the BBC walked through it. The legal architecture of accountability is still functioning, even when it looks dismantled. Nixon had the tapes. Trump may end up producing his own. The one thing this administration cannot control, no matter how many words they manufacture or how many people they arrest, is the truth. And consequences have a way of catching up to those convinced they are untouchable.
