Is this the end of the USA as we know it?
The shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner gave this administration an opportunity it couldn’t pass up. Karoline Leavitt told the country that criticism of the president is no longer just disagreement. It is dangerous. Potentially criminal. She said that those who “constantly and falsely label and slander the President as a fascist, as a threat to democracy, and compare him to Hitler” are “fueling this kind of violence.” She chose the word “slander” deliberately. It is a legal term. It is actionable. She was not complaining about rhetoric. She was laying the groundwork for a prosecutorial framework where calling the president a fascist could carry legal consequences.
Then she read a list of names. Democratic elected officials, one by one, in front of every camera. Hakeem Jeffries. Josh Shapiro. Elizabeth Warren. Adam Schiff. Each name with a quote stripped of context, each one handed to the most radicalized people in this country as proof that these officials are dangerous. She knows how Trump’s base works. You give them a name, and the death threats follow. She read the list anyway. And she did not say a single word about the president who called his opponents “vermin,” who said immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country,” who shared a video of Joe Biden hog-tied in a truck, and who told a crowd on January 6th to “fight like hell” before they beat police officers with flagpoles.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries responded directly, calling her “a disgrace and a stone-cold liar” and pointing out that a pardoned January 6th rioter had threatened to kill him using the word “terrorist.” He told her to “get lost” and “clean up your own house.” Because what she described from that podium, if it becomes policy, if it becomes law, is the end of political dissent in America. If calling the president a fascist is treated as indistinguishable from trying to harm him, then every protest sign, every social media post, every voice raised in opposition becomes a potential crime. That is what this moment is. And cornered regimes do not criminalize dissent when they feel secure. They do it when the walls are closing in.

We are living through a pivotal moment for our country, and my goal is to reach as many people as possible with clear, factual information about what is happening. The more people who understand what is unfolding, the better our chances of pushing back against chaos, cruelty, and corruption ahead of the midterms.

When they said things will get worse I believe this is a pivotal moment where our first amendment rights will be tested, standing up to what the extremists in government call their second amendment rights. Don’t be fooled. Resist, the lower courts are on our side.
Exactly right, Hakeem. We saw her on PBS News Hour tonight, wearing that cross. Ugh!
