This week, the Department of Homeland Security posted a recruitment ad that looked more like 1930s propaganda than anything else we have seen before: a militarized Statue of Liberty, a massive airship hovering overhead, and the words “Secure America’s Future.” Most people might have missed what it was signaling, but it wasn’t for most people. Zeppelins like that were once tools of Nazi propaganda, and some of us recognized it immediately. We know what that symbol meant then. And we know what it means now. This was a deliberate dog whistle to modern-day extremists. At the same time, Trump pressured Indiana lawmakers to pass a gerrymandering bill or risk losing federal funding. He continues to block sign language interpreters from White House briefings to control his image. His allies cut ties with PBS. And across the Atlantic, MAGA-aligned forces are working to fracture European unity and spread the same authoritarian ideology. These are the next chapters in the fascism playbook.

I take hope in the resistance to ICE in every community, the collapsing poll numbers for Trump and Republicans, and the results of recent elections. I also believe for all our faults, Americans despise fascism. This is a brutal fight and a slog because of Trump's sociopathy, Republican acquiescence and a corrupt and lawless Supreme Court. The tide is turning, we have to blow them out in midterms and '28. Then we need to hold them to account and changes to our laws. We need to fight and fight hard against American racism.
