I’m from the United States of Ruin
You can smell it before you see it. The stench of decay rising from our democracy, from our institutions, from the lies that rot the air we breathe.
It is not a single collapse. It is the slow, deliberate destruction, the map gerrymandered beyond recognition, the scientist silenced, the lawmakers punished for daring to protect the law. It is the pile of small, corrosive acts that together leave a nation hollowed out.
This week, the rot was everywhere.
In Texas, where Trump demanded five new seats and will most likely get them. In the Pentagon, where crime investigators are pulled off their cases to guard one man’s ego. In Atlanta, where scientists who protect us from disease are being fired by the hundreds. And in Washington, where the offices built to stop foreign interference are being gutted just as our enemies step up their attacks.
This is what ruin looks like when it comes from within.
The Ruin of Democracy
For years, I told myself one thing about America that I could believe in: we don’t rig elections.
Even when Trump spewed lies about 2020 being stolen, I never doubted the truth. He lost. He lied. But our elections held. More than 60 courts threw out his lawsuits. Even Bill Barr, his own attorney general, said the fraud claims were nonsense.
That gave me something to hold onto: that no matter how loud he shouted, the system was still real.
But now, watching what happened in Texas this week, I feel that belief slipping.
The Texas House just passed a redistricting map that hands Trump exactly what he asked for: five new Republican safe seats. Not because voters demanded it. Not because population growth required it. Because the President of the United States picked up the phone and said, “Find me five.”
And now the bill goes to the Texas Senate, where Republicans hold the majority and are expected to approve it quickly. Once it clears that chamber, it will land on Governor Greg Abbott’s desk, where a signature is all but guaranteed.
In other words, this was not just a stunt in the House. This is the path to becoming law. Unless the courts step in, those five seats will be carved into stone before the next election.
This is not speculation, it is exactly how Trump operated in 2020 when he told Georgia’s secretary of state to “find” him votes. Only this time, instead of being recorded and shamed, he got his wish.
And what makes it worse: Texas is the fastest growing state in the country, and that growth is overwhelmingly Black and Hispanic. Under any fair system, those communities should gain representation. Instead, Republicans sliced them apart, ensuring that white majority Republican districts grow stronger while minority voters are silenced.
I am going to call it what it is. Racist. This is to keep not only MAGA Republicans in office and ready to jump at the whim of any of Trump’s demands, but it also strips people of color from their voice and representation.
I used to tell my kids with conviction: yes, elections are fair. Yes, your vote matters. But how do you say that when the president calls a state and seats magically appear? How do you tell them to trust a system where one man’s demand outweighs millions of people’s voices?
This is ruin, the destruction of faith in free and fair elections.
The Ruin of Truth
Then I heard Trump call himself a “war hero.”
I live in San Diego, surrounded by military bases. Camp Pendleton. Miramar. Naval Base Coronado. Service is in the air here. I have family who has worn the uniform. I know what sacrifice looks like.
The veterans I know are the ones who did not know if they would come home alive, but went anyway. They are the ones who lost friends. The ones who carry invisible scars. The ones who put their lives on the line for something bigger than themselves.
They are heroes. The ones who made it back, and the ones who did not.
And then there is Trump, who dodged service with “bone spurs,” who mocked John McCain as a loser for being captured, who once compared avoiding STDs to fighting in Vietnam. That man called himself a war hero.
It was a slap in the face. A kick in the gut.
And it did not stop there. Just days earlier, he bragged about “ending six wars.” He has not ended a single one. Not in Ukraine. Not in Israel or Gaza. Not anywhere. The lies roll out faster than they can be corrected, and the point is not to make you believe them. The point is to make truth meaningless.
This is ruin, the destruction of truth itself. A country where propaganda replaces reality, where lies are repeated until the real heroes are mocked into silence.
The Ruin of Institutions
And then there is the ruin of science.
Every single one of my children is alive because of modern medicine. I am alive because of modern medicine. My youngest daughter was once so sick that I stopped writing for years. We were in dark days.
And then a doctor stepped back, looked at the big picture, and ordered one test. That test gave us an answer. That answer gave us her life back.
That is what medicine does. That is what science does.
Most of us have stories just like this. Where modern medicine saved a life or gave us more time with those we love.
But now, over 600 CDC employees have been handed termination notices. Programs that track infectious diseases, prevent child abuse, stop domestic violence, and guard against the next pandemic are being dismantled. This comes less than two weeks after a mass shooting at CDC headquarters itself. Instead of protecting scientists, this administration is firing them.
Meanwhile, RFK Jr., the man Trump appointed to oversee health policy, is attacking pediatricians for following evidence and spreading lies about vaccines. Vaccines that turned polio, measles, and smallpox into history. Vaccines that lengthened human life expectancy by decades. Vaccines that his own children received, even as he tells others to reject them.
And now his rhetoric has put doctors in an impossible position. The American Academy of Pediatrics has stood by its own evidence based vaccine schedule, even as the CDC watered theirs down. That means pediatricians who follow the AAP could face greater legal exposure, lawsuits, malpractice claims, even insurance companies refusing coverage, because malpractice standards and liability protections often track federal guidance. In other words, the very doctors doing the right thing could now be punished for it.
At the same time, RFK Jr. is pushing a scheme that could collapse the entire system. He wants autism and asthma treated as vaccine “injuries,” despite overwhelming scientific proof that they are not. One in 36 American children has autism. One in 12 has asthma. If those conditions were recognized as vaccine injuries, millions of families could file claims overnight. The Vaccine Injury Compensation Fund would be bankrupted instantly. And once it collapses, vaccine makers lose their liability shield and face an avalanche of lawsuits so massive they could walk away from the United States market entirely.
Here is what the science shows: vaccines do not cause autism. Vaccines do not cause asthma. Every serious medical body on earth, the CDC, the NIH, the WHO, has said so. But RFK Jr. has built his career and personal fortune as a lawyer suing over vaccines. Expanding the definition of injury would not only sabotage public health, it would open the door to a legal feeding frenzy that benefits him directly.
This is not about protecting children. It is about dismantling the very system that has kept generations of children alive. Collapse the fund. Scare away the manufacturers. Leave America defenseless against diseases we already conquered. That is the ruin RFK Jr. is inviting.
And yet, here is the flicker of hope: the American Academy of Pediatrics refused to cave. They put out a vaccine schedule rooted in evidence, knowing it exposed them to greater risk. They chose truth anyway. That courage is fragile, but it matters. It shows that even in the middle of ruin, there are people still willing to plant a flag for science and for children’s lives.
This is ruin, and also resistance, inside the very institutions meant to protect us.
The Ruin of America’s Credibility Abroad
And it does not stop at home.
This week, Trump’s administration sanctioned judges of the International Criminal Court, not war criminals, but the judges investigating them. Judges whose only offense was doing their jobs.
America, once the nation that stood for justice, now punishes judges for enforcing it.
Our allies condemned it. The European Union called it a threat to international law. Human rights groups called it authoritarian. And our adversaries, Russia, China, Iran, seized on it as proof that America no longer believes in the very rule of law we once championed.
But to Trump, this was no embarrassment. It was a victory. Because he craves the approval of impostor strongmen, not principled statesmen. He looks up to dictators because they reflect back what he wants most: unchecked power. He cannot stand beside real leaders with conviction, their integrity exposes his emptiness. So, in true Trump fashion, he gravitates toward those who are as corrupt and self serving as he is.
This is ruin, the destruction of our moral authority abroad. A superpower that once exported democracy now exports hypocrisy.
The Ruin of National Security
And while America’s credibility crumbles abroad, our defenses are crumbling at home.
Tulsi Gabbard, handpicked by Trump to lead intelligence, announced this week she will slash the Office of the Director of National Intelligence by almost half. Nearly 40 percent of staff, gone. Entire offices shuttered, including the one dedicated to tracking foreign disinformation.
Think about that. Russia, China, and Iran are already running coordinated propaganda campaigns online to interfere in 2026. And instead of strengthening our defenses, we are dismantling them.
It makes you wonder if that is not the point. If Trump actually wants it easier for outside forces to manipulate our elections. Because chaos and doubt are his oxygen. And when foreign adversaries meddle, it does not weaken him, it weakens the very system he is trying to tear down.
This is exactly what the 9/11 Commission warned against, the failure to connect the dots. We created ODNI to prevent another blind spot. Trump and Gabbard are bringing the blind spots back.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon has reassigned hundreds of Army investigators, agents who normally pursue serious crimes like sexual assault, child exploitation, and corruption, to act as personal bodyguards for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and his family. Cases are piling up while the people trained to protect the most vulnerable are pulled off their work to protect power instead.
And think about the hypocrisy. Trump ran on a platform of protecting children and promising to release the Epstein files. But instead of exposing predators, he has reassigned the very investigators who go after them. Instead of delivering transparency, he has quietly moved Ghislaine Maxwell into more comfortable conditions.
He promised justice. What he has delivered is protection for the powerful and abandonment for the victims.
This is ruin, the destruction of the very institutions meant to keep us safe.
But There Is Pushback
And yet. Even in ruin, I see sparks of resistance.
Over 750 federal workers signed a letter to Health Secretary RFK Jr. after the CDC shooting, demanding not only physical protections at their workplaces but also an end to his repeated spread of vaccine misinformation. They reminded him that his words put targets on their backs, and that a government leader has a duty to defend the people who keep Americans safe from disease, not endanger them.
And inside the Pentagon, the Department of Defense Inspector General confirmed multiple active probes into Secretary Pete Hegseth’s use of Army CID agents for his personal security detail. Agents who normally investigate felony crimes, from sexual assault in the ranks to contractor fraud, have been pulled away in the hundreds. Oversight officials are now tracing how many cases have been delayed or abandoned, and whether national security was compromised in the process.
And yes, the American Academy of Pediatrics still chose courage, putting out a vaccine schedule rooted in truth even when it put them at greater legal risk. They showed that truth still has defenders, even when it comes at a cost.
These are not small acts of resistance. They are proof that even in the middle of ruin, there are people refusing to normalize it, workers willing to risk their jobs, and watchdogs willing to dig for the truth when those in power try to bury it. These sparks remind us that ruin is not destiny, it only becomes permanent if we stop fighting back.
This is the ruin of America if we let it stand. A ruin where democracy is chipped away seat by seat, where truth is mocked until lies take its place, where science is gutted and doctors are silenced, where national security is hollowed out for personal gain, where the rule of law is traded for political vengeance.
As a parent, I ask myself every day: what lessons are my children learning in these years? That elections are for sale. That lies can be repeated until they sound true. That health is negotiable. That power is what you can take, not what you can earn.
But I also know they are watching us. Watching whether we push back. Watching whether we name the ruin for what it is and refuse to accept it.
I still believe in this country. I still believe in us. But belief alone will not stop the rot. It takes action. It takes courage. It takes enough of us saying no.
Because if we do not, ruin is all that will remain.
And I refuse to raise my children in a nation defined by ruin.
I will see you tomorrow.
Heather
