I'm from the United States of Deliberate Destruction.
Where a 90,000-square-foot ballroom is being built inside the White House while grocery bills rise and paychecks shrink.
Where gold-plated ceilings matter more than affordable health care. Where luxury gets fast-tracked, and human need gets sidelined. Where the administration claims it's privately funded, but taxpayers still foot the bill for security, logistics, and the fallout. Where Trump insists others are paying, but it always ends up landing on the American dollar. Always.
Where 2,300 DACA recipients in California are losing their health insurance, not because they broke a rule, but because the rule was rewritten to push them out. Where lives built here, taxes paid here, and futures dreamed here are erased with a policy memo.
Where the Smithsonian has quietly removed the only president impeached twice from its impeachment exhibit. Where Nixon, Clinton, and Johnson remain, but Trump is nowhere to be found. As if hiding the record will help us forget the reality.
Where ICE has already extended job offers to 1,000 individuals, offering up to $50,000 signing bonuses, more than many teachers make in a year.
Where agents are recruited with promises of power and protection, then deployed without name tags or badge numbers visible, making them nearly impossible to identify when complaints arise.
Where a parallel force is rising, less bound by law and more shaped by fear.
Where police departments across the country have warned that ICE's recruitment push is draining talent and destabilizing local public safety.
Where the promise of unchecked power is pulling officers away from communities and toward a federal force built for loyalty, not accountability.
Where President Trump fired Dr. Erika McEntarfer, head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, just hours after a weak jobs report showed only 73,000 jobs added in July, well below the expected 106,000, and dramatic downward revisions to May and June data. He accused her of fabricating numbers to hurt Republicans, with no evidence. Where one factual report cost a statistician her job, and every economist now wonders if any economic data will remain trustworthy. Where transparency is punished, and obedience is rewarded.
Where the president calls for 35% tariffs on Canada, our neighbor and ally. Where trade becomes a weapon and economics become punishment. Where Trump's tariffs are actually taxes that aren't paid by governments, but by families at checkout counters.
Where vaccination rates plummet below safe thresholds for herd immunity, measles returns with a vengeance. Where public health collapses under the weight of disinformation. Where science is ignored and lies are platformed. Where we're told not to worry, even as vaccine-preventable diseases spread unchecked and hospital beds fill with children who can't breathe.
Where Trump demands drug prices fall by 60 days. Not with legislation. Not with negotiation. Just with spectacle. No power behind it. Just distraction and delay, again.
Where history is edited, care is withheld, law is blurred, and chaos is repackaged as order. Where the goal isn't justice or service or democracy. It's control. Always control.
Where Trump is "seriously considering" pardoning Sean "Diddy" Combs, even as multiple women have accused him of assault and abuse. Where MAGA followers were convinced he cared about protecting women, even while he was found liable for sexually abusing and defaming a woman himself. Where the lie is not just that he stands for justice, it's that he ever stood for women at all.
Where Reddit stock rises 20% because people want real conversations, not cable spin. Where Substack raises $200 million because people are hungry for news that isn't filtered through a boardroom and can't be directed by the president or his administration.
Where legacy media cuts truth-tellers while hedge funds buy headlines.
Where Trump just defunded the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, forcing it to shut down entirely.
Where local stations that gave a voice to rural communities, educators, and underserved regions will now go silent.
Where the loss isn't just about programming, it's about infrastructure that took decades to build and may be impossible to restore.
Where the emergency alerts you see on TV were funded by the programming he just demolished.
Where the shutdown isn't about money, it's about control. Because he knew he couldn't control them, so now he's eliminating them.
Where independent voices become the last line between us and the darkness.
Where the disconnect is growing wider.
Where the policies are bolder, the cruelty is clearer, and the intentions are no longer hidden.
This isn't random chaos.
It's a coordinated strategy: overwhelm the public with crises while quietly transferring wealth upward and accountability downward. Keep people fighting about pronouns while they empty the treasury. Make government so dysfunctional that privatization looks like salvation.
Where this isn't chaos by accident. It's chaos by design. A stage show of fire meant to exhaust, distract, and divide.
Where even now, in all of this, people are waking up.
The old friend who voted twice for Trump but now says they'll vote blue down the line. The parent who stops scrolling long enough to ask real questions. The neighbor who starts organizing instead of nodding along. The coworker who changes the channel and no longer watches far-right MAGA propaganda on TV.
And if they can change, more can.
A few days ago, I ran into one of those friends. Someone I thought was a lost cause. Someone who had voted for Trump again and again but told me they're done. They see it now. They are already counting down the days until the midterms because they and their spouse will be voting blue down the line.
And as we stood there talking, another friend overheard us. Someone who doesn't follow the news much anymore. They said it's all just felt too heavy, too endless, so they stopped paying attention. But something in our conversation caught their ear. They started asking questions. They were shocked. Concerned. Awake.
So here's what I want to leave you with: Talk to your friends. Talk to your neighbors. Don't assume they're too far gone. Don't write them off like I almost did. They might surprise you. And one honest conversation could be the beginning of everything.
Look for the bright spots in these trying times. Let those carry you when it feels too heavy. That one conversation has given me life because it is proof that our work matters. We are not obeying in advance like so many in Congress are. We are drawing a line and fighting back in any way that we can.
The nonstop dismantling of our country might wear us down, but I still believe in this country. I believe in us. I believe we are stronger than their greed, louder than their lies, and braver than their fear.
I'll see you tomorrow.
Heather
