If we lose this fight, the USA will be lost forever
At 6:05 in the morning, FBI agents raided the home of Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson. She was not accused of a crime. They took her phone, her laptops, and a hard drive containing communications with 1,169 federal employees who had trusted her with what was happening inside their agencies. And now the FBI has opened a leak investigation, this time targeting an Atlantic journalist whose sources revealed that FBI Director Kash Patel had allegedly been engaging in heavy drinking and unexplained absences. The first raid was framed around classified information. This one isn’t. You just have to share something about someone they want protected, and the government will come after you.
You don’t have to silence the press directly if you can make the press silence itself. And the closer we get to the midterms, the faster these attacks are coming.
But the courts are still holding. Two federal judges blocked the Justice Department from accessing Natanson’s devices. And on Monday, the very reporting they tried to silence won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. There are still journalists refusing to be intimidated into silence. And there are still millions of Americans who will not surrender to cruelty and fear, no matter how exhausted they become. That is the resistance they cannot break. And that is what will carry us to November
