Tonight, from inside the White House where he has sequestered himself for the second consecutive day, Donald Trump posted a decree at 11:18 p.m. on Truth Social that reads less like a president speaking and more like a man consumed by his own survival. “1000 Missiles are Locked and Loaded,” he wrote, threatening to “completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran” over a one-year period, “subject to extension,” should Iran act on threats to assassinate him. He signed it as though it were a government contract, and closed with “PRAISE BE TO ALLAH,” mocking the faith of the very people whose supreme leader he helped kill and whose funeral processions are still underway. Earlier that same day, in an interview published by the New York Post, he told a reporter, “I hope you’ll miss me” and revealed he has already left instructions for retaliation if he dies. Most people facing mortality think of their families and hope for peace. Trump’s dying wish is more destruction, and it reveals a man who cannot imagine relinquishing control even in death, let alone in November.
The threats against him are real. Iran has wanted him dead since he ordered the 2020 strike that killed General Qassem Soleimani, and mourners at Ayatollah Khamenei’s funeral carried banners reading “WE WILL KILL TRUMP” while a eulogist called his assassination “our duty.” But Trump is not simply reacting to danger. He is using it, wrapping himself in the language of personal threat to justify the concentration of more unilateral power. That pattern came into full view on Thursday when the White House fired all three remaining commissioners of the Election Assistance Commission, the only federal agency whose sole purpose is helping states run elections. It now sits empty, with no quorum, four months before the midterms. The firings were made possible by the Supreme Court’s June 29 ruling in Trump v. Slaughter, which overturned Humphrey’s Executor and gave Trump power to fire commissioners across roughly two dozen independent agencies. He used it within 11 days, aiming first at the commission that helps America vote. Meanwhile, CISA has lost about 1000 staff, and Michigan’s deputy secretary of state said plainly, “All of those relationships have been destroyed.”
And then there is Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Houston construction worker. On July 7, ICE agents in unmarked SUVs stopped his white van, claimed he rammed them, and shot him dead. Two days later, DHS admitted he was never their target. His three sons are American citizens. He was close to legal status. As he bled out in front of his brother Victor, an agent mocked him: “You wanted to escape, right?” His son Ronaldo learned of the death from a Facebook post. These are not separate stories. They are one strategy. Add DHS building its own deportation airline with no outside oversight, and the picture becomes unmistakable. This is an apparatus of force and fear built ahead of the midterms. You do not need to cancel an election when you have already made voting harder, riskier, and more frightening. This is our moment to get loud, to call representatives, to demand answers, and to keep telling the truth to everyone. These are still the good days, the ones when we still have time to stop this, and if we leave nothing on the table, we will know we answered history’s call.
