But instead of focusing on the sacrifice, courage, and humanity of the young men who crossed an ocean to confront fascism, Hegseth transformed a solemn remembrance into yet another political rally. Standing on ground made sacred by those who fought and died for freedom, he compared modern immigration by sea to an invasion, bringing his anti-immigrant rhetoric into one of the most hallowed places in the Western world. "Sadly, today, different European beaches are stormed by different, dangerous ideologies. Beaches in Spain, Italy, Greece and Bulgaria, boats and men arrive. When will European capitals do something about that invasion, or is it too late?" he said. "I pray not, and I believe not." In that moment, the most disturbing part was not simply what he said. It was where he said it.

And most of those immigrant fore-bearers were vilified when they arrived to the U.S. Hegseth’s background is Norwegian. Each generation of new arrivals to the US had to deal with ridicule and discrimination, & the demand they “go back to where they came from”.
When will we all ever learn to live kindly together.
