He spoke openly about consulting oil executives before and after the Venezuela strike, bypassing Congress and confirming the operation was coordinated outside the usual democratic process. While he singled out Greenland again, even after global condemnation, the bigger concern is how casually he’s normalizing extrajudicial military action.
Trump appeared animated, even gleeful, as he outlined a foreign policy doctrine rooted in intimidation, extraction, and unchecked power, while the Republican Party stood behind him.

We are in desperate need of an opposition leader to emerge with moral clarity and righteous outrage to lead the fight. The two people closest to capturing the outrage for me are James Tallarico and Ro Khanna. I keep waiting for a voice of courage to emerge to provide a counterpoint to Trump's evil. Somebody stand the f up, NOW.

Human blood for oil is how modern America (with the postwar aid of the previous oil empire, the UK) was built. Its federal politics have been structured around the protection of its petrodollar. We are living through a rare historical period where the actions the men who actually run nation states take daily to uphold political democracies are no longer hidden from global public sight.
If we find it criminal and brutal and wish to change this status quo capitalist based political governance, a public conversation is needed openly discussing its pros and cons and offering alternative worldviews.
Heather, thank you for laying out so clearly what is happening right before the world’s eyes. I see it too, and I feel it. But when I look around, what I see more than anything else are complacency and denial. People who don’t want to “deal” with what is happening because it’s too upsetting and they don’t want to upset the illusion of calm and control in their own lives. It’s maddening, because everything you outline is real, and the threat is growing by the day and staring us all in the face. I suspect it will all have to collapse - our government, states’ rights, the economy, stable food chains, transportation and energy, everything - before people actually feel it personally enough to get off their asses and care enough to act.
Heather I have been actively posting subscribing reading your column and many others for over a year. Today, after the debacle of Saturday and the invasion of Venezuela by the trump regime, I have unsubscibed to everyone and everything except you. I am finding other ways to resist aside from writing, reading,scrolling and screaming, crying and grieving - reminds me of the phrase "Whistling into the wind."- I look forward to reading your thoughts and ideas as we continue to skate on thin ice over quicksand.
