After hiding inside his golf club all weekend, avoiding the waiting press, the President of the United States posted more than 60 times, each share more disturbing than the last, until even some of his own MAGA supporters began openly wondering whether he was having a mental health crisis. He posted an AI image of himself on a black metallic throne surrounded by armored robot soldiers with fire filling the ceiling, captioned “GIVE THEM NIGHTMARES.” He posted himself detonating nuclear explosions across the Earth from a space station, renaming New Mexico to “New America,” and declaring the moon property of the United States. This is the same thing happening over and over again. The bruises on his hands show up, he disappears for days insulated by loyalists, then reappears more energized. His own former White House attorney, Ty Cobb, was asked if Trump is still mentally capable of serving and answered simply, “I think he’s gone.”
If this were an aging parent or grandparent, we would be having the hardest conversation a family can have, asking whether they could still live alone, calling their doctor, taking away the car keys. Instead, we are letting the man posting fantasies of robot armies and nuclear fireballs command the most powerful military on Earth and hold the nuclear codes. If a real catastrophe struck tomorrow, a cyberattack, a hurricane, a military assault, he would be responsible for our survival, and nothing we are seeing now suggests he could rise to the moment. None of this is new. The broken, cruel men who sought power in the darkest chapters of history, from Hitler to Mussolini, did not become cruel once they had power. They sought power to expand a cruelty they already carried. It was never the position that made them monstrous. It was who they already were.
The damage is spreading beyond our borders, too. In Germany, the far-right AfD won nearly 44 percent of the vote in a state election, more than double their share five years ago, potentially the first time the far right has controlled a German state government since the end of World War II. Germany built memorials warning the world about exactly this, and those warnings are now being tested. Here at home, we are under two months from the midterms, and the more days Trump spends unraveling online, the more it helps flip Congress, because whether his supporters admit it or not, nobody wants to live in this kind of instability. His decline is a political liability for Republicans and a flashing warning for the country. The more the world sees of it, the more his party splinters, and the greater the odds of the biggest blue wave in our history.
