At 10:00 am this morning, the official social media account of the United States Department of Education posted a video no other living or dead presidential administration would have ever even imagined publishing. While they were attempting to glorify Donald Trump and show the world just how powerful and feared he was, the clip they chose to make that point ended up saying something far darker than they seemed to realize, or more honest than they meant to be. Either way, no one at the agency responsible for educating America’s children appears to have stopped long enough to understand what they were actually posting or the ramifications for doing so.
Yesterday was a sad day with the Dolly Parton news. It was heavily reported on the news. I spent the day converting my abundant cucumber crop into pickle. Messy and hard work but rewarding.
What James Watson has done is so brave, he stood tall to be counted and my hope for America is many will follow his lead and stand beside him, not just the military but all citizens who believe what is going on in USA is lethally bad and dangerous.
You have concentration camps full of “illegal Immigrants”- have any gone to trial or had a hearing ?
Stand tall and protect the James Watson’s of this world and make sure he is heard and protected in the future.
I have tremendous respect for Major Watson’s courage. Whatever one ultimately thinks about the military rules involved—and I appreciate that you did not dismiss their importance—he understood the potential consequences of what he was doing. He put his career, his freedom, and essentially the life he had built on the line because he believed the oath he took to defend the Constitution required him to speak.
It made me think about how much easier it is for the rest of us to speak when the consequences are so much smaller.
I found my voice relatively late in life. I have strong opinions and I write songs about them, but I do so with a degree of anonymity. I can speak loudly while still protecting much of my private life. Major Watson did not have that luxury. He put on his uniform, attached his name and his future to his convictions, and accepted whatever came next. I don’t pretend that what I do requires anything approaching that kind of courage.
But I also want to acknowledge your courage, Heather.
Every day you put your name behind what you believe and help the rest of us understand a world that can sometimes feel almost impossible to make sense of. You don’t put thoughts into my head. More often, you give voice to thoughts that were already there but that I didn’t yet have the facts, context, or understanding to fully articulate.
That distinction matters to me. I often finish one of your essays realizing that an opinion I already held was underinformed, sometimes misinformed, or simply missing important context. You give me facts to test those opinions against. Sometimes they survive. Sometimes they change. Either way, I understand more than I did before I started reading.
Your writing has inspired songs in me, and almost every essay seems to leave another unwritten one behind. But more importantly, reading you has become part of how I educate myself.
You ended this essay with the idea of people refusing to stay quiet and saying what so many of us are thinking. You have an extraordinary ability to do exactly that.
Major Watson reminds us what speaking can cost when the stakes are enormous. Your work reminds me why speaking—and understanding what we’re speaking about—still matters.
I end most days reading your essay. I frequently come away better informed, more thoughtful, and occasionally forced to reconsider something I thought I understood.

If only our politicians cared one tenth as much as this Major, he would not have felt the desperation that left his conscience unable to go one. If only those Republicans voted as senators and congressmen and those appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States were doing their job and enforcing Rule of Law and protecting the Constitution, If only they had the courage and the conviction of this Major who could not continue to watch this farce. His efforts should be respected and heard and he should be exonerated when Trump is impeached along with those that have allowed this to happen.
We have our soldiers dying for a war they will not call a war because it does not have congressional approval. I have to ask, how are we, as a nation, allowed to kill over 160 innocent little school girls in Iran if there was no war going on there? We were not retaliating for an act Iran perpetrated on American soil! We were still in negotiations over keeping them from producing nuclear weapons and producing less drones and missiles. What reason did Trump really have for partnering us in the surprise attack on Iran that killed their leaders and their children? I would think that would make the strikes, the bombing, the killing, all of it, an illegal use of our military might. Whenever, in the history of our country, did any one American leader order our military to attack a nation on the notion of that one person? When? There is no precedent for this. Congress was not even informed before the attack. When has this happened before in our past?
Please look into the delay for the Camp LeJeune Justice Act, which continues to waste away on Jim Jordan's desk in committee. My husband already died waiting for justice. How many others must die waiting on the government to take responsibility for poisoning Marines, their families, and civilians. We need light to shine on this injustice. Please help!

For Ohio, for all even new voters you must register or update your voter registration no later than 30 days prior to an election. Upcoming voter registration deadlines: October 5, 2026 for the November 3, 2026 General Election.
Please Look it up for your own individual states. Again, you can no longer be “purged” from any states voter rolls.
Damn it felt good an additional 31 people who will cast their votes for the very first time. We’ve gotten smarter and have additional laptops for anyone who wants to complete it on-line. Next day is Monday the goal another 3 high schools. Who knows the number who will be eligible to register yet it feels good to teach again. Wouldn’t throw any shade at these younger ones about using their voices. We may not see them all the time out and about with signs, but they are there watching it all and by what we all overheard, they have had “enough”.. they are definitely looking for change.. Smart young adults who know what’s at stake in loosing..
I’m going to reach out to a former student. I had already reached out to a former beloved teacher I worked with, who would have tons of influence because he is well loved and respected and friends on Facebook with many.
Perhaps I can encourage him to at least get kids to register to vote.
We are lucky to have same-day registration, but it concerns me for those off to college not getting their ballots and vote in.
Excellent, good luck. Would caution to ask either the principal or superintendent of the schools. When you ask connect it to history, if there’s a civics course or any other subject that less than a 5 minute presentation can be accomplished. We just hang around when they have breaks in between classes and have laptops ready for them to register. Think each state basically has information on what’s the procedure and can use that. I mean it’s the states information.
Also may try to connect with League of Women’s voters. They have excellent resources and may be able to assist. Another good source is something like the Ohio Organizing Collaborative. Don’t know if there is something like this in every state that is a pro-democracy organization that helps register voters in that state.
Good luck, go get ‘em if you get one, it’s one more person who gets to vote for the first time to experience the best part of being an American along with Free Speech, IMO it’s voting. You made your voice heard.
I love that you’re engaging these young people. In high school we marched and chanted “ Hell no we won’t go!” “My body my choice!” My city has ten colleges full of students too. We had abortion care signed into law,got the voting age down to 18 too. The Vietnam war did finally end. Young people are passionate and are capable of achieving much..Power to the people!👍🏼

Grand mother and Mom women’s rights and even my grandfather and dad. Both these men always said they never married their equal they married way above their level. Yes these young adults are passionate about other things we didn’t have to think about. Found it both upsetting yet encouraging that they were angry and wanting more. It seems they want change quickly yet we did too when younger. Maybe they will achieve it quicker than generations before.. Hope so.
When I was born here in the U.K Winston Churchill was still our Prime Minister . My life was bomb sites and traumatised , grief wracked adults doing their best to survive . Churchill resigned 4 years later, in 1955 and by the time I was 9 or 10 years old I began to take in the horrifying accounts, newsreels and still living nightmare of WW11 in our daily lives.
I asked questions and read voraciously and soon I was asking why. Why, why, why could one man be allowed to perpetrate such evil and horror ? Yes these young adults are passionate about other things we didn’t have to think about. Found it both upsetting yet encouraging that they were angry and wanting more. It seems they want change quickly yet we did too when younger. Maybe they will achieve it quicker than generations before.. Hope so.

When I was born here in the U.K Winston Churchill was still our Prime Minister . My life was bomb sites and traumatised , grief wracked adults doing their best to survive . Churchill resigned 4 years later, in 1955 and by the time I was 9 or 10 years old I began to take in the horrifying accounts, newsreels and still living nightmare of WW11 in our daily lives.
I asked questions and read voraciously and soon I was asking why. Why, why, why could one man be allowed to perpetrate such evil and horror ? I could never get an answer that satisfied me and my parents grew increasingly distressed by my insistence so I stopped asking.. because they them selves did not have an answer that satisfied them.
Here , at last, we have one answer.

He stood on those steps and did what no other military person dared to do.
He said 'no more, enough, this will not happen'
Imagine if whole platoons, whole regiments, did that. said 'Enough, we will not obey these unconstitutional orders, stop ! Imagine if the major was the tipping point and everyone followed .

What a brave man Major Watson is, speaking out against the orange buffoon's illegal war. I do understand the logic behind his arrest but Major Watson's loyalty is towards upholding the Constitution and not to a deranged President who unilaterally declared war on Iran.
More than ever, EVERYONE should pledge an oath to the Constitution and not to a single man, especially one intent on destroying the American way of life, setting neighbour against neighbour, one against an ‘other’ and strong against weak.

We are living in unprecedented times. we have never had a president such as this. I do fear for my life and for those of my loved ones.
