Soaking in the attention with a huge grin on his face, he rocked gently to the music, moving his hands back and forth while a room packed with members of the military, defense industry executives, billionaire financiers, Cabinet officials, and government leaders rose to their feet, clapping and cheering. When the song finally ended, Trump lowered himself into his chair, leaned toward the microphone, and opened his nearly 55-minute remarks with, "Wow, what a great... wow, what a great song that is. We've all heard it. It became hot. Lee became very wealthy." Referring to the man who sings the anthem that has become the opening soundtrack to nearly every one of his public appearances.
I’m English, reading this in the UK. I cannot believe the Democrats have allowed this to reach the point it has. Waiting to do things legally, in November, was never going to work. Why on earth didn’t they organise military, loyal to the Constitution, to round up the whole lot of Congress and Senate Republicans, plus the dear leader, and mount a coup? Instead the whole world has to suffer just because you’re scared of civil war.

If you have read Heather, you know that the US military, for better or worse, is inculcated to obey and follow their leadership, and Trump and Hegseth have gutted the military of anyone who might question their orders. Trump has created a paramilitary force whose remit is supposedly immigration but who are in fact his SS. And as Randy says, our civil war is all too fresh in many people’s memories; they are itching to refight it.

The US party system does not work like the British one; there is no head of the party (even the president is only temporarily the head of his) and neither the governing party nor the opposition can trigger an early election. With the collusion of Congress and, appallingly, SCOTUS, the Heritage Foundation's long-pursued agenda to dismantle our democratic government and replace it with a "unitary presidency" is coming to fruition. Unitary presidency, Chief Justice John Roberts' oft stated goal for his tenure on SCOTUS, is really just a more palatable name for an authoritarian dictatorship.
The foundations of our democratic republic have been shattered or seriously undermined. Here and there a pillar still stands but the weight of the collapsing structure is gradually crushing even the strongest.

We ought to be thankful that his staff doesn’t stop him from revealing his innermost thoughts in his speeches. Speech by speech, he is defeating himself, becoming his own worst enemy. He is a drunk on a barstool, reminding us again and again that selfishness rules his spirit.

Heather! thank you for pulling together so much discouraging, depressing news from so many different sources and angles and putting it into a coherent whole so that we can begin to try to make sense of it. When Trump was first elected, I thought he’s a fool. He’s incompetent and he’s corrupt. He won’t last a year. He’ll end up flying to a country that doesn’t have an extradition treaty and live out his life. What I didn’t count on was the enablers. I am still in a state of shock induced by the number of enablers he has. I watched parts of Todd Blanche‘s hearing and Jay Clayton‘s hearing, watching them squirm and try to avoid saying anything that would piss Trump off. How humiliating! Jon Ossoff did the best job of all, especially when he just said “WHAT???”watching Clayton trying desperately to avoid answering questions.
Ossoff is amazing. That is why Trump is gunning for him, planning to announce tonight that Ossoff’s election was fraudulent. I was a Georgia resident and voter in 2020: our election was clean and decisive; the only “election interference” came from Trump himself and his cronies. We should be supporting Democrats in Congress like Ossoff, not ragging on them because they don’t start an insurrection like the Republicans.
