At 12:29 this afternoon, I was driving to pick up my daughter when my phone suddenly started lighting up with nonstop message notifications, one after another, without a break for several minutes. There were so many that my mind went to the worst places. When I was finally able to pull off the freeway and look to see what the emergency was, the first thing I saw was a message that began with “URGENT!” from someone named Dave at a local phone number I didn’t recognize.
That is unconscionable! However, this is what the Republican party is left with: scare tactics. It is the only way they can try to win this election, but they won't. Democrats have a soul, a mind and a heart, and the American people know that's what they want in their leaders.
Heather, the president and his administration's relationship with us IS abusive. That's exactly what it is. Not only are our traditions, values, and norms being violated, but WE are subject to abuse every single day. And of course, he blames us, the victims, for his and his administration's behavior. Maybe we don't look like we should, or act like we should, or submit like we should, or pretend like we should. So the abuse ramps up.
Our only safe house is our vote and our communities and our living with some joy anyway. Every time I give someone a hug or get some work done or cook a meal, I am resisting, giving a finger to his bullying. After what I hope will be dancing in the streets on Nov. 4 and beyond, I know he will try all kinds of things to hold on to power. But if we have TWO branches of government resisting him, instead of just one, he and his minions will be the lamest of lame ducks. May that give us renewed strength and some rest.
We are all actually in an abusive relationship with him. The cruelty, misogyny, lies, and gaslighting are not true of only him; they’re true of every Cabinet member that lies to us every single day as well. We’re being traumatized by this regime, and it will take a lot of time to recover.
Excellent, Heather, for reflecting on and teaching what democracy is and how it must work, through our continuous efforts and occasionally struggles. It isn't automated, we make it work, or not, and that is where selfish bad guys sneak in and try to make it work exclusively for them. We are reminded: "Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country." We work for good luck this time around.
Great words Heather! And I hope that you all go to the polls on tuesday. Try to get your friends that hesitate to also give their votes. Find strength together and demonstrate. Trumps brownshirts ICE are nothing but cowards. Many of those who voted wrong in 2024 has come to their senses, so remember that the ”good side” is now in fact in great majority. Fight back and turn history right again!
Heather — You remind us of the words of Reinhold Niebuhr, the American theologian who fought for social justice in the early 1900s:
"Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. . . Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we must be saved by love.”
I was born in 1946 my earliest political memories were of the steel strike in the 50’s and the conflicts in Southeast Asia which I heard daily on the radio during lunch at home. Eisenhower was President. In Chicago we walked to and fro with no school buses bc all schools were neighborhood schools. In school we learned that the United States was the Great Melting Pot and welcomed everyone. That so impressed me bc my grandparents came over from the “Old Country”. My dad was born one month after the ship sailed into Ellis Island. I have a long memory of what this country stands for. What is happening is unbelievable. It will take a long time to undo all of the damage to our liberty and at 80, I doubt I will be here to witness it. I have hope in my heart that November 3rd will be a turning point and the beginning of a new and better nation that future generations will enjoy and preserve.
Everything going on now is abnormal. The blame needs to fall directly on the Republicans. They have enabled this Taco for 10 years. It’s exhausting and maddening for so many people. I feel like if Democrats win, will they investigate everyone? I don’t know if impeachment for Taco will work. It’s seems leadership doesn’t want to do it. When have they listened to We the People? Honestly they should have done a better job. This strongly worded letters are ridiculous.
There are some Democrats that are in for the money. Some agree with Republicans John Fetterman. I read and watch your videos. It keeps me sane sometimes. Thank you Heather 🗳️🙏🏻✌🏻💙🇺🇸❤️
Gosh Heather, this is really scary. I thought Trump might find an excuse to declare martial law, but what happened to you, and maybe other brave souls, seems more insidious. Do you think that the Republican Party (read Trump) are using AI? Thecwords of Edmund Burke are even more relevant today than it was in the 18th Century.
Thank you Heather, for listening literally ad nauseum to him every day, and then synthesizing what he says into a coherent, biting message. We love you!
Donald tRump hates himself. Not out of empathy for the nation he hates. But he has no power over what he wants to control. In his businesses, he was the top dog so he had power, and everybody had to lick his boots. In a democracy, it’s too big, and he doesn’t understand how to or what strings to pull to float his parachute to a soft landing. Because the winds of freedom will not support his dense heavy ego. So he plummets. Onto the rocky barren peaks of his own making. That will shred his parachute and slice him to pieces. His bitterness towards himself is eating him up. He thought he could control it but it got out of hand. The way he use to control the young and innocent. But he has learned that life is the shits when you have to reap what you sow.
