At 11:15 this morning, the sitting President of the United States published a post on Truth Social, and exactly one hour and twenty-five minutes later he published another. Read side by side, these two posts tell us almost everything we need to know about who Donald Trump respects, who he treats as a personal threat, and the kind of country he is reshaping America into. In the first, he wrote about Chinese President Xi and said, “I take him at his word.” He described his relationship with Vladimir Putin as one that “remains” intact and boasted that he was doing Xi “very big favors.” Eighty-five minutes later, he turned to Canada, one of our closest allies and the country with which we share the longest peaceful border in the world. There, brushing off being disinvited from the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge as “fine,” he declared that the United States had changed an agreement and would now take “50% of the Profit” of the new bridge. In the span of less than an hour and a half, the contrast could not have been sharper: warmth and trust for two authoritarian leaders, mockery and contempt for a friend.
Look closer at that first post and it only gets worse. Trump is telling the entire world that the foundation of his leadership rests on personal relationships between powerful men. “I take him at his word.” “The relationship remains.” “I am doing him very big favors.” He is speaking about the leaders of China and Russia, democracy’s two most significant adversaries. He even feels compelled to note that he does not sell weapons to Ukraine, adding that “how those Weapons are distributed, I have no idea,” because he refuses to take a strong stand against his friend Putin even as Russia attacks a sovereign nation. His careful, generous words go to strongmen. His trust goes to dictators. And to Canada, an actual ally, there is nothing but a demand for money skimmed from a bridge named after a man who spent his life bringing our two countries together. This is a portrait of a presidency organized around the admiration of power itself, and it should unsettle anyone who still believes America is supposed to stand for something more.
The deeper question is who this presidency is actually for. According to Forbes, Trump’s net worth has more than doubled since the start of 2024, climbing from an estimated 2.4 billion dollars to 6.3 billion, money drawn from cryptocurrency ventures, overseas licensing deals, and financial arrangements tied directly to the power of the office. A UAE royal secretly bought half of the Trump family’s cryptocurrency company for 500 million dollars just days before the inauguration, and weeks later the administration granted the UAE access to advanced American semiconductor technology the previous administration had blocked. Meanwhile he sells Bibles, watches, sneakers, and digital coins from the Oval Office, while the programs Americans have paid into their entire working lives keep losing their funding. So it is worth asking anyone still standing with him to stop and look honestly at their own life. Are the groceries cheaper, the paycheck bigger, the doctor easier to see, the future safer for their children? Those were the promises. If the answer is no, even to one of them, then something has gone very wrong. This is a dark time, and the President has deliberately divided us, but there are enough people stepping back, quietly and honestly, to change the math. We still have a Constitution, we still have elections, and the midterms are less than four months away. That is why there is still hope for America, and why you should have it too.
