At 10:00 in the morning, the official account of the U.S. Department of Education posted a video no other administration would have imagined publishing. Meaning to glorify Trump as a strong and feared leader, they shared a scene from Darkest Hour, with Churchill shouting, “You cannot reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth!”, captioned “No one does it like us.” The problem is the tiger in that scene was Adolf Hitler, and Churchill was not calling him strong. He was warning that you cannot negotiate with a fascist. The next line is the one that matters most: “When will the lesson be learned?” That is the question the Department of Education accidentally asked the entire country.
The answer is playing out right now in the story of Major Jason Watson of the U.S. Air Force. In July, he put on his uniform, walked to the steps of the Capitol, and called for the impeachment and removal of Trump and Vance over the unauthorized war in Iran. He knew it could cost him his career and his freedom, and he spoke anyway. He has not stopped since. His attorney believes he is the first major in the history of the American military to face them. Watson knew the rules better than anyone, but he also took an oath to the Constitution, and he decided the greater danger was staying silent. Hours later, Trump posted a photo of himself as a teenager in military academy dress, misleading anyone who did not know he never served a single day, received five draft deferments, and reportedly called the war dead “suckers.”
Watson is not alone. This week, veterans’ groups launched nearly 1,000 billboards near military bases, telling the families who actually pay for this war exactly what it is costing them. This is a new level of resistance rising from inside the military community itself, from people who understand the weight of that oath in a way most of us never will. They know there is something above every general and even the president: the Constitution, written that way on purpose, so loyalty to the law would always be stronger than loyalty to any one man. After the camps were liberated, the world said “never again,” and taught it so we would recognize the signs before it happened again. Churchill was right about the tiger. You cannot keep feeding it and hope it leaves the rest of us alone. But Watson refused, the veterans are refusing, and people across the country are refusing to accept that any one man should be more powerful than the Constitution that belongs to all of us. When will the lesson be learned?
