On the 250th birthday of the United States, after hours of storm delays, the President of the United States finally stepped onstage behind bulletproof glass on the National Mall and compared this moment to the birth of the nation itself, calling July 4, 2026, and July 4, 1776, “two big ones.” He declared this celebration “bigger” and “more beautiful,” and teased a third term. On the anniversary of the document written in rejection of monarchy and concentrated power, Donald Trump once again made the celebration revolve around Donald Trump.
But earlier that day, his America was on display in a far more dangerous way. Roughly 400 masked men marched through the nation’s capital carrying Confederate flags and chanting “Reclaim America,” wearing matching uniforms and white face coverings to hide their identities. They were part of an extremist organization called Patriot Front, a white nationalist hate group founded after Charlottesville, and yesterday’s march was the culmination of a recruitment campaign deliberately timed to the 250th anniversary. One Reuters photograph captured it all: a Black woman sitting alone on the Metro, surrounded by masked men filling the train car. Trump never condemned them. His silence was his approval. And it should surprise no one, because those masked men did not appear overnight. They are the product of a decade of rhetoric teaching Americans to fear one another, the same rhetoric he repeated that very night, calling political opponents communists and “a cancer” that must be “cut out fast.” They cover their faces because they know what they are doing is wrong. The founders signed their names knowing it could cost them their lives.
What Donald Trump does not understand is that America survived 250 years because of Americans. Not the man behind the glass, and not the men behind the masks, but the people treated the worst who carried this country anyway. The enslaved who built it. The Native communities who survived genocide and preserved their cultures. The immigrants who crossed oceans and deserts believing a better life for their children was worth the risk. Four former presidents released statements yesterday carrying the same message: democracy is unfinished, and every generation must fight for it. The golden age Trump is building is not for us. It is for his enablers and the men in masks. But the real golden ages have always been the ones we build together. The promise was never that America would be perfect. It was that it would keep trying. And we will never stop.
